eForge Glossary: SEO (Search Engine Optimization)

Search Engine Optimization is a very important process where a website is made more visible to search engines such as Google, Yahoo and Bing. SEO is key to providing a successful website ranking amongst competitors online. Ideally your website should be ranked high enough to receive a place on the first few pages of the search engine. Very few potential customers bother to search after the third page.

Google changes its ranking algorithm so regularly that it is becoming impossible to cheat the system to get a higher ranking. It is possible to optimize your website’s metatags and keywords for a search. However, the cheapest sure-fire way to promote your website’s ranking is by regularly advertising your site on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Linked-In and other social media platforms. Alternatively, you can regularly publish blogs linked to your website. Google then picks up that your website is regularly linked to particular key search words, and ranks your site more highly for those words.

An easier but more expensive method of increasing your ranking is to pay for Google Adwords. With this method, you pay only when a prospective customer clicks on your website link, called pay-per-click. You pay a budgeted amount upfront and your balance is reduced with every click on your link. If competition for your particular keyword is high, the price per click will also be higher.
